Meeting Minutes
Taking advantage of the absence of our classical hating friend, we played a master tape of Mahler's First conducted by Paita. This was the surprise winner of a private sweepstakes with Mahler First's by Solti, Horenstein and Mehta. I had not heard of Paita before or since which signifies nothing. Maybe he was a Mahler First specialist?
A feature of this recording is an unusual amount of bass energy which proved too much for the single Hsu VTF-2 MK4 (VICTOR TANGO FOXTROT) subwoofer on hand. (Its three siblings would be installed a few daze later and with four subs on hand the unusual amount of bass energy was handled handily.) The poor sub was pushed into (highly) audible overload.
After surrounding some Q during which we learned that From Hong Kong built recording studios in a previous lifetime, we set about breaking Club Rule Number One and played the first J. Geils album followed by Taurus and Stairway to Heaven. Opinion was divided amongst present members as to whether plagiarism had been committed. The Literal Renderers were heavily in the no plagiarism camp whereas the Heart of the Music types thought it was a slam dunk case and the judge must have been out of his freakin' mind or tone deaf (possibly both). Translation: note for note it might not have been a copy, but the mood evoked was overwhelmingly similar.
The inaugural meeting happened to coincide with the birthday of Does It Deeper which I consider to be a most auspicious omen. A contextually appropriate card was presented. A contextually appropriate present was presented. A carrot cake was presented which also proved contextually appropriate being that carrot cake is Does It Deeper's fave. We still don't know how old he is. It's pretty top secret actually.
